Manya Koetse is a sinologist, China social trend watcher, and editor-in-chief of What’s on Weibo, an internationally well-visited website that reports the trending topics and digital developments in mainland China. She is an MPhil in China & Japan Studies (Leiden University/Peking University), and lived in both countries. Her experiences in China have resulted in an ongoing strong connection with this country, its language, people and culture. She specializes in the cyberculture and rapid transformation of social media in the PRC, and keeps her finger on the pulse of what’s up and coming when it comes to digital developments, and how the Chinese government both stimulates and restricts these dynamics. In a time span of four years, What’s on Weibo (www.whatsonweibo.com) has grown from a personal blog into a website that now receives some 300,000 readers each month, and is often mentioned in the established media. Besides her activities as a scholar and writer, Manya is a frequent speaker for companies and news programs (from BBC to Al Jazeera), explaining Chinese social trends, China’s (online) media landscape, and its present-day cultural and societal developments.
